He flirts heavily, but when you tell him you are interested, he..?

So, there is this guy who really flirts with me, and there was an obvious strong mutual attraction, then I pretty much told him I was interested in him, and he proceeds to bad mouth himself telling me he is not intelligent, nor attractive, making himself sound totally pathetic, etc...? WTH? Help Please?
